Did you guys know that November 15th is America Recycles Day? If you didn’t, well you do now and you should also know that it’s the only nationally recognized holiday dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. While recycling paper and plastic is a common household practice, recycling items like denim may not have occurred to most people. Keep reading to find out more.
I consider myself to be pretty environmentally conscious. In college, a lot of my elective courses were about the earth and the environment so preserving our planet for ourselves and the future has always been a big priority to me. At home I recycle my papers, plastics, and aluminums. I try to always bring my own reusable totes and refillable water bottles wherever I go, and these days I’m enjoying riding my bike around the city over taxis. As a fashion blogger, my wardrobe is a lot more robust than others. With endless giftings and my own purchases to help supplement outfits for my photoshoots, I didn’t always consider how wasteful my industry could be and it’s negative effects on the environment until recently. I’ve made a conscious effort to do better. Now I only accept relevant giftings that go along with jobs I’m doing and I reach out to companies beforehand asking them to please check with me first before sending out any automatic mailers. Unused items are usually gifted to family and friends or donated so they don’t go wasted. And now with Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program, I’m going a step further and recycling my denim. Also fun fact: my bucket hat is made from recycled denim scraps and it’s one of my favorites!
.
.
So what is Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program all about exactly? Well essentially it’s a denim recycling program who’s call-to-action is to recycle denim and give it new life. Denim is made from cotton, and since cotton is a sustainable fiber it can be recycled and transformed into something new. That means less denim goes to landfills and less waste! The recycled denim from the program is used to create natural cotton fiber insulation that is given back to communities across the country and is utilized in various building efforts. So the program helps in going green and giving back to the people and our planet.
Here’s how we can get involved! In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15th, Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ is hosting its first ever #DenimStackChallenge in order to inspire more sustainable living through one simple act – recycling your unwanted denim! It’s super easy to get involved, so let me give you the quick rundown below:
1 – Take Inventory Of Your Denim
Go through your closet and assess all the denim items you own. That can include jeans, shirts, jackets, and accessories!
.
.
2 – Decide What You Want to Keep and What You Want to Recycle
Once it’s all laid out in front of you, sort it into a keep pile and a recycle pile. Even if it’s old or worn, it can still be recycled and be transformed into natural cotton fiber insulation.
.
.
3 – Stack, Snap, and Share with #DenimStackChallenge
Pile up your denim and take a picture! You can take a picture of the jeans alone or add a smile to the pic by sharing your stack with a selfie! Once you snap the photo, share it on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media with the hashtag #DenimStackChallenge between 11/11/19-11/18/19. Make sure to tag me too @oh_anthonio, and tag other friends who you’d like to participate. The goal is to make as many people aware of the program so the more people you tag, the better!
.
.
4 – RECYCLE!
Drop off your old/worn denim items at one of the many retailers participating in Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program or mail it in for free via Zappos for Good. Any type of denim apparel can be contributed for recycling so long as it’s at least 90% cotton. Check your labels! You can find out where to drop off your denim here: www.bluejeansgogreen.org
.
By taking part in the #DenimStackChallenge you’re helping reduce the amount of denim waste that goes into landfills. Not only that but you’re helping out other people by providing them with insulation from the recycled cotton denim. It’s as easy as that to make a meaningful difference for our planet so I hope you guys will participate and encourage all your friends to do the same! And also keep an eye on my Instagram this week for a special sweepstakes to kick off this challenge!
